Perry Barr Stadium - history of the build

The stadium was originally opened in 1929 for the athletics club Birchfield Harriers which was founded in 1877. It still carries an Art Deco badge sculpted by William Bloye.

The stadium's original name was the Alexander Sports Ground. Birchfield Cycling Club also used the venue during the 1930s. At the same time, it was also being used for Speedway races.

During World War II, it was used by the Government and the Home Guard. It was also used to house Italian Prisoners of War, and was only returned to the club in 1946. In their Centenary year of 1977, Birchfield Harriers moved to their new home of Alexander Stadium in Perry Park. The old venue was then renamed to Perry Barr Stadium.

Greyhound racing had stopped in Perry Barr in 1984, but negotiations were held in the early 1990s for it's return. A new greyhound track was built in 1991. The stadium is also known as Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium. Speedway returned to Perry Barr Stadium by 2007 with the Birmingham Brummies Speedway team. The stadium has had several different owners in the last couple of decades.

Perry Barr Stadium is now the only remaining greyhound racing stadium in Birmingham after the closure and demolition of Hall Green Stadium (which existed on York Road in Hall Green from 1927 to 2017).
